WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (970 WFLA) - Polk County Sheriff’s Office detectives said they charged 24-year-old Christopher Finlayson of Winter Haven Friday with Aggravated Child Abuse after they say Finlayson had thrown an 11-month old baby across a room. Deputies said the baby suffered a skull fracture, two broken wrists and five fractured ribs.
Deputies say the baby had been left in Finlayson’s care while the mother went to the store on Thursday evening. When the mother returned around 7:00 pm, deputies say the baby was unresponsive. Sheriff’s deputies say the mother questioned Finlayson who told her the baby had hit its head on a play pen. The mother took her baby to Winter HavenHospital which in turn contacted the PCSO, deputies said.
Polk deputies said Finlayson admitted to detectives he had smoked a “blunt and a half” of marijuana on Wednesday and had been up the night before, and that he “lost it,” and in a moment of rage and frustration threw the baby across the room when he could not stop the baby’s cries.
The baby is listed in stable condition and was transported to St Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa for continued medical treatment, according to PCSO.
Deputies said Finlayson was booked into the Polk County Jail on no bond.
